Kitchen February 2007
foust on Feb 12th 2007
Pros:
Big ol’ window looking out onto a pleasant front yard. Sink drain pipes in front of that window, for nice experiences washing dishes. Decent size with layout options (once those walls come down!)
Cons:
The first time we saw the place one of the features that really stood out was the wall between the kitchen and main living area and how it unnecessarily separated the two. It was so apparent to us how much nicer it would be if that wall wasn’t there. Adding to the separation effect was a smaller wall bisecting the kitchen and creating a small, dark nook housing the existing washer, dryer, and fridge. There was no good reason for that wall either.
The floor tiles were two layers thick of asbestos in shades of rust and very cracked and broken. The countertops were not in bad shape but a not very attractive cream colored laminate. Same with the cupboards. The dishwasher and fridge were not functional and the range was electric (not the way we roll) with one burner broken and missing the oven handle. The laundry section had broken machines, lots of peeling paint and the water service sticking up out of the floor.
The kitchen and adjoining utility room are one of the two large demolition projects; Bathroom 1 being the other. The outcome of this renovation will reveal a larger kitchen that is entirely open to the dining and living room. See that wall on the right? That is coming out. Check out (in subsequent posts) what we did to make 2 enclosed rooms into one open and inviting space.
