I feel like a fish out of water a lot of the time, but I acknowledge that I’m also the one who jumped out of the bowl/river/lake/ocean to flap around in discomfort while figuring out a way back into the water.

I am grateful for the knowledge that I have the power to jump out and jump back in. That power is how we create our life, if we know we have it, learn how to use it, and practice, practice, practice.

I am also grateful for the awareness that I am either swimming in the water or floundering around out of it. Being fully present in that awareness is how we experience life to the fullest, learn about our inner and outer realities, and access the infinite guidance of the universe, so that we can spend less time floundering, or swimming upstream, and more time going with the flow. Going with the flow does not mean an absence of effort; swimming is still hard work and there will inevitably be dangerous currents, snags, diversions, steep drops, and predators to deal with. That’s why it’s so great to minimize unnecessary effort and build up strength, energy, and awareness so we’re prepared to meet those challenges with the fierce grace of a mighty fish.

I immediately added the “Part 1″ to the title because this is such an all encompassing subject. I’ve talked about it before (so that post will now become Part 1.a and this post Part 1.b) and I know there are many angles to cover, beyond what I touch on today. The previous discussion was about choosing your approach to life, how you frame what the Universe serves up to you every day, your attitude (I’ll choose an “attitude of gratitude” like Baron Baptiste cultivates!) That is a good example of how karma/destiny/fate and free will are not mutually exclusive. It’s highly debated amongst the compatibilists and determinists.

I believe, without having concrete evidence, that the Universe creates a basic framework for us to exist within. My human brain can only philosophize about what determines that unique framework each of us is given, each moment of each day on this planet. I do believe karma (past Choices and actions) is a large component of it. There’s a lot happening that goes beyond the thought patterns and conscious experiences of the majority of humans. These deep, deep, layers of matter and energy are theorized, deconstructed, and disagreed upon within the fields of physics and philosophy. Where they intersect (metaphysics and quantum mechanics for example) is where reality is found. At least that’s my take on it, right now…

So, that’s one layer of choice we humans have: how to frame/approach the reality we are handed. What I planned to talk about today was Intention (I like to capitalize it because it is So important) which is another layer of choice available to us. Intention actually encompasses several choices, and they are: the path we walk on; the steps we take along the path; and the life we envision ourselves living. That will have to wait for Part 2 of this series!

The Road

I wrote this back in February ‘07, several months after the concept of e-volvedliving emerged.

***

Starting in my teens I’ve written about my life in a blank book of one form or another which I carry around with me whenever I’m out and about. Over the years, though, the responsibilities of life have grown and the time for sitting down and thinking/writing has shrunk. As that time has decreased it has become more valuable to me. What is most beneficial for me to write about with the time I have? And beyond just the issue of time, what purpose does the act of writing serve?

Along the way I’ve started thinking about the output of these sessions – the words on the page. There is a box I carry around each time we move, keeping it close to my desk, full of those books of words about my life. I don’t venture into it often, but what a treasurehouse; those words describe my evolution during it’s most rapid phases – the teens and twenties – where each day and my purpose on this planet were huge mysteries. Existence will always be mysterious, that is the challenge and joy of life, but snugly into my thirties now, I am interested more in what is succeeding and failing in the world, my impact upon it, and taking actions to improve it and design a life in harmony with it. The purpose for my writing is to research, explore, and document these themes. But it doesn’t feel worthy of my time anymore if the words just collect in another blank book which will end up in the box by my desk.

As I’ve grown I’ve become more and more aware of the challenges facing planet earth, the critical choices/opportunities given human beings, and my limited time to make wise choices/take wise action and learn from the unwise ones. These themes are universal and it behooves me, as a creature of the universe, to share what I learn, and engage others in the exploration. That is what I have arrived at after all these years of words on a page.

This is not a selfless pursuit, though. I’m not sure I believe anything is. If we don’t understand, center, and take care of ourselves, how can we really embrace life, and be of service to others? In that regard the biggest challenge and necessity for me has always been to have my work – my livelihood – and my life be intimately connected and on the same path. That requires, and also affords, the freedom and independence to focus on what really matters. (It’s like the chicken and the egg – you can’t have one without the other.)

So, I am taking the words to my laptop because from there they can move to the web and be shared with others. The web is also a great vehicle for conducting research and connecting with global communities; not a substitution for seeing/experiencing/interacting, just a complementary method.
